Tip Calculator
Calculate the tip amount and total bill. Split the bill evenly between any number of people.
What Is a Tip Calculator?
Tipping culture in the UK is more complicated than in the US — there's no universal expectation, amounts vary by setting, and the question of whether a tip actually reaches the staff is worth knowing. In sit-down restaurants, 10–12.5% is broadly standard if service was good. Many restaurants automatically add a 12.5% service charge — always check your bill before adding more on top.
The legal position: since October 2024, the UK Tips Act requires employers to pass 100% of tips, gratuities, and service charges directly to workers, without deduction. This replaced a situation where some employers kept a share of card tips or used them to top up minimum wage. Knowing your tip goes to the staff rather than the business makes the decision to leave one easier.
Enter the bill total, the tip percentage you want to leave, and the number of people sharing. You'll see the tip amount, the total per person, and total for the table.

How Does the Tip Calculator Formula Work?
The formula used: Tip = Bill Amount × (Tip Percentage / 100). Per Person = (Bill + Tip) / Number of People
The tip amount is the bill multiplied by the percentage expressed as a decimal: Tip = Bill × (Percentage / 100). A 15% tip on £80 is 80 × 0.15 = £12.
The grand total is Total = Bill + Tip. When splitting, each person pays Per Person = Total / Number of People, rounded to the nearest penny.
Rounding may cause the per-person amounts to sum to one penny more or less than the total. The first person listed absorbs the difference.
What Are Some Example Calculations?
Bill of £85.00 with a 15% tip split 4 ways: Tip = £12.75. Total = £97.75. Per person = £24.44.
Dinner for two: £54 bill with 12.5% service charge
£54 × 0.125 = £6.75 tip. Total = £60.75. Split 2 ways = £30.38 each.
Each person pays £30.38.
US restaurant: $120 bill with 20% tip for 3 people
$120 × 0.20 = $24 tip. Total = $144. Split 3 ways = $48.00 each.
Each person pays $48.00.
Quick coffee: £4.50 bill with 10% tip, no split
£4.50 × 0.10 = £0.45 tip. Total = £4.95.
Total to pay: £4.95.
When Should You Use a Tip Calculator?
When splitting a restaurant bill between several people. Enter the total before tip, choose your tip percentage, and enter the number of diners. Everyone pays the same amount and no one needs to do arithmetic over a dessert they're too full to enjoy.
When travelling abroad. Tipping expectations vary enormously by country — 15–20% is standard in the US, 0–5% in Japan, variable in Europe. Enter the local bill amount and the appropriate tip percentage for that country to get the right figure in the local currency.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a standard tip percentage?
In the UK, a typical tip is 10 to 15% for good service. In the US, 15 to 20% is standard. Many restaurants include a service charge, so check your bill first.
Should I tip before or after tax?
In the UK, prices usually include VAT, so you tip on the total shown. In the US, it is customary to tip on the pre-tax amount, though tipping on the total is also common.
How do I split a bill with different orders?
This calculator splits evenly. For different amounts, calculate each person's subtotal separately and apply the tip percentage to each.
Is it rude not to tip in the UK?
Tipping is discretionary in the UK. Leaving no tip for poor service is acceptable. For good service, 10-12.5% is the norm. A service charge on the bill can be legally refused.
Should I tip on a takeaway order?
Tipping on takeaway is not expected in the UK. In the US, a small tip of £1-2 or 5-10% is increasingly common for counter service and delivery.
How do I tip when paying by card?
Most UK card terminals prompt for a tip amount or percentage. Add the tip before confirming payment. Carry small cash if you prefer staff to receive the tip directly.
What tip should I leave for hotel housekeeping?
Leave £1-2 per night in UK hotels. In US hotels, $2-5 per night is standard. Place the tip on the pillow or desk with a note indicating it is for housekeeping.
