What Is a Word Counter?
Every word counter does the same basic thing, but the secondary stats are what make it genuinely useful. Knowing you have 500 words is one thing — knowing that's a 2.5-minute read, 3.8 minutes if spoken aloud, and 17 sentences across 4 paragraphs tells you something about the structure and pacing of what you've written.
Word limits are everywhere: university essay word counts, job application personal statements (usually 150–250 words), LinkedIn summaries (around 300 words shows best in search), cover letters (250–350 words is the sweet spot), and blog posts (800–1,200 words for most topics, 1,500–2,500 for SEO). Having a live count while writing stops you finding out you're 400 words over limit after you've already finished.
Paste your text into the box and all statistics update instantly. No character limits, no sign-up, no processing delay.

How Does the Word Counter Formula Work?
The formula used: Words: split on whitespace. Reading time: words ÷ 200 wpm. Speaking time: words ÷ 130 wpm.
Words: Split the text on whitespace (spaces, tabs, newlines) and count non-empty segments.
Characters with spaces: Total length of the string including all whitespace.
Characters without spaces: Total length after removing all whitespace characters.
Sentences: Count occurrences of sentence-ending punctuation (. ! ?) followed by a space or end of text.
Paragraphs: Count blocks separated by one or more blank lines.
Reading time: words ÷ 200 minutes (average adult reading speed).
Speaking time: words ÷ 130 minutes (average presentation pace).
What Are Some Example Calculations?
A 500-word essay: 500 words, ~2,800 characters, ~25 sentences, 2.5 min reading time, 3.8 min speaking time.
250-word cover letter
250 words ÷ 200 wpm = 1.25 min read. ÷ 130 wpm = 1.9 min spoken.
Reads in about 1 minute 15 seconds. Spoken aloud takes about 1 minute 55 seconds.
1,200-word blog post
1200 ÷ 200 = 6 min read. Typical recommendation: 1,000–1,500 words for most blog topics.
6-minute read. Within the recommended range for most blog formats.
When Should You Use a Word Counter?
When writing to a word limit — university assignments, application forms, editorial submissions. Write freely first, then check how far over or under you are and edit accordingly. Much easier than trying to hit a target while writing.
Before a presentation or speech. The speaking time estimate (130 wpm) tells you roughly how long your script will run. Most professional presentations target 100–120 wpm for clarity, so the estimate gives you a minimum — your actual delivery will likely be slightly longer.

What Are the Best Tips to Know?
- Twitter/X has a 280-character limit; LinkedIn posts perform best under 700 characters for preview text.
- A4 page with standard margins and 12pt font holds roughly 500 words.
- Academic word counts typically exclude the bibliography and footnotes — check your institution's rules.
- Reading speed varies widely: slow readers average 150 wpm, fast readers 300+ wpm. 200 wpm is the middle.
What Mistakes Should You Avoid?
- Assuming word count includes the title and headings — many academic submissions count body text only.
- Using character count when a platform specifies word count (or vice versa).
- Treating the reading time as exact — it's an average and varies significantly by reader and content complexity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does punctuation count as a character?
Yes. Character count includes all punctuation marks, spaces, and special characters. 'Hello, world!' is 13 characters with spaces and 11 without.
How accurate is the reading time estimate?
It's based on 200 words per minute, which is the accepted average for adult readers of standard prose. Technical content, dense academic writing, or text with many statistics is typically read more slowly — treat it as a minimum.
What counts as a sentence?
The calculator counts sentence-ending punctuation: full stops, exclamation marks, and question marks followed by a space or end of text. Abbreviations like 'Dr.' may occasionally be miscounted.
Is there a maximum text length?
No. The counter works entirely in your browser with no upload or server processing, so there is no practical limit on text length.
