What Is a Due Date Calculator?
That positive test changes everything — and the first question is always the same: when? The due date shapes every decision from here, from booking your first midwife appointment to planning maternity leave. NHS midwives use Naegele's Rule — your last menstrual period plus 280 days — and this calculator uses exactly the same method.
Enter either your last menstrual period (LMP) date or your conception date if you know it (common with IVF). The calculator shows your estimated due date, which week you're currently in, which trimester you're in, how many days remain, and a full milestone timeline from first heartbeat through to full term.
Only about 4% of babies arrive on their exact due date. Most arrive within two weeks either side. The NHS considers 37-42 weeks as the normal range for delivery, so treat the date as a strong estimate rather than a fixed appointment.
How Do You Use This Due Date Calculator?
Select whether you're entering your last menstrual period (LMP) date or conception date. Enter the date and click Calculate. You'll see the due date, current gestational week, trimester, days remaining, and a week-by-week milestone timeline.
- Select your calculation method — Last Menstrual Period (LMP) or Conception Date.
- Enter the date using the date picker.
- Click Calculate Due Date to see the results.
- Check your estimated due date and current gestational week.
- Review which trimester you're in and how many days remain.
- Scroll down to see the week-by-week milestone timeline.
- Milestones already passed are highlighted in green with a tick.
How Does the Due Date Calculator Formula Work?
The formula used: Due Date = LMP + 280 days (Naegele's Rule). From conception date: Due Date = conception date + 266 days.
Due date calculation uses Naegele's Rule, the same method used by NHS midwives and GPs.
Due Date = First day of LMP + 280 days (40 weeks)
If calculating from conception date: Due Date = Conception Date + 266 days (38 weeks). Since conception typically occurs around day 14 of the menstrual cycle, the calculator adjusts conception dates by subtracting 14 days to find the equivalent LMP, then adds 280 days.
Gestational age counts from the LMP, so at conception you are already considered approximately 2 weeks pregnant.
What Are Some Example Calculations?
LMP of 1 January 2026: Due date = 8 October 2026. At 10 weeks: First trimester. Days remaining: 210. Estimated conception: 15 January 2026.
LMP of 15 March 2026, checked on 1 June 2026
Due date = 15 March + 280 days = 20 December 2026. Days since LMP = 78. Current week = 78/7 = 11 weeks 1 day. Trimester = First (weeks 1-12). Days remaining = 280 - 78 = 202.
Due date: 20 December 2026. Currently 11 weeks 1 day. First trimester. 202 days remaining.
Conception date of 10 February 2026, checked on 15 May 2026
LMP equivalent = 10 Feb - 14 days = 27 January 2026. Due date = 27 Jan + 280 days = 3 November 2026. Days since LMP = 108. Current week = 15 weeks 3 days.
Due date: 3 November 2026. Currently 15 weeks 3 days. Second trimester. 172 days remaining.
IVF transfer on 1 April 2026, checked on 20 August 2026
LMP equivalent = 1 Apr - 14 days = 18 March 2026. Due date = 18 Mar + 280 days = 23 December 2026. Days since LMP = 155. Current week = 22 weeks 1 day.
Due date: 23 December 2026. Currently 22 weeks 1 day. Second trimester. 125 days remaining.
When Should You Use a Due Date Calculator?
Use this as soon as you have a positive pregnancy test and know the date of your last period. It gives you an immediate estimate before your first midwife appointment. After your dating scan (usually around week 12), the NHS may adjust the due date based on the baby's measurements — but this calculator gives you a reliable starting point using the same formula your midwife uses.
What Do These Terms Mean?
What Are the Best Tips to Know?
- Your dating scan at around 12 weeks may adjust the due date by a few days — this is normal and more accurate than LMP alone.
- Only 4% of babies arrive on the exact due date. Most arrive within 2 weeks either side.
- The NHS considers 37-42 weeks as the normal delivery window — don't panic if your date passes.
- If you know the exact conception date (IVF, tracked ovulation), use that option for a more precise estimate.
- Book your first midwife appointment as soon as you have a positive test — don't wait for the due date.
What Mistakes Should You Avoid?
- Using the date of the positive test instead of the first day of the last period.
- Confusing gestational age (from LMP) with foetal age (from conception) — gestational age is always about 2 weeks ahead.
- Treating the due date as an exact delivery date rather than an estimate within a 5-week window.
- Not updating the due date after the dating scan if the midwife provides a revised estimate.
Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is a due date calculator?
LMP-based calculations are accurate to within about 2 weeks for most women with regular cycles. A dating scan at 12 weeks narrows this further. Only about 4% of babies arrive on the exact calculated date.
What if I don't know my last period date?
If you know your approximate conception date or IVF transfer date, use that option instead. Otherwise, your midwife can estimate dates from a dating ultrasound scan, which measures the baby's size to determine gestational age.
Why does gestational age start from the last period, not conception?
Because most women know when their last period started but not the exact day of conception. Starting from LMP is a reliable, standardised reference point used worldwide. It means you're considered about 2 weeks pregnant at the time of conception.
Can my due date change after the dating scan?
Yes. If the scan measurements differ from the LMP estimate by more than 5-7 days, your midwife may adjust the due date. The scan-based date is generally more accurate, especially if your cycle length varies.
What is the difference between this and the pregnancy calculator?
The pregnancy calculator provides trimester dates and basic gestational age. This due date calculator adds conception date input, a detailed milestone timeline, and days-remaining countdown for more comprehensive pregnancy tracking.
Is this calculator suitable for IVF pregnancies?
Yes. Select the Conception / IVF Transfer Date option and enter the date of embryo transfer. The calculator adjusts the LMP equivalent by subtracting 14 days, then applies Naegele's Rule as normal.
